A look back thirty years with archival footage of Day of the Dead celebrations in the weavers’ town of Teotitlán del Valle in 1994. Footage discovered in the artist’s archive of Day of the Dead celebrations, this new work shows the preparations for Dead celebrations in this Oaxacan Central Valleys town in 1994.
Children playing the “nuts” game, traditional ofrendas, food being prepared in traditional kitchens, and what seems like the entire village going to the cemetery to not only await their ancestors, but perhaps also new faces. Thirty years ago there were no moto taxis or buses that went into the center of the town and cellular phones did not exist. Offering a ride to a young woman walking in from the main road, we were introduced to family and friends, who offered their stories and customs.

Una mirada hacia atrás treinta años con imágenes de archivo de las celebraciones del Día de Muertos en el pueblo de tejedores de Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca en 1994. Descubierta en el archivo del artista de las celebraciones del Día de Muertos, esta nueva obra muestra los preparativos para las celebraciones de los Muertos en este pueblo de los Valles Centrales en 1994.
Niños jugando al juego de las “nueces”, ofrendas tradicionales, comida que se prepara en cocinas tradicionales, y lo que parece ser todo el pueblo yendo al cementerio a esperar a sus antepasados y quizás también caras nuevas. Hace treinta años no existían los mototaxis ni los autobuses que iban al centro del pueblo y no existían los teléfonos celulares. Al ofrecer un paseo a una joven que caminaba desde la carretera principal, nos presentaron a familiares y amigos, quienes ofrecieron sus historias y costumbres.
